Industrial made Finnish mid-century modern design ARABIA Finland 'Kaarna' (bark) tea pot with iron oxide glaze. It has a beautiful matte brown glaze with a pattern that resembles tree rings or grains of wood buy. The Kaarna tea pot was in production at the Arabia factory from 1961-1971.
The design is both bold and functional, feels lovely in the hand and is a "lovely pourer". Stoneware ceramics are dense and solid due to the high firing technique used in their production. They were inspired by Japanese stoneware, both in their form, palette and material. The iron oxide finish - a seductive blend of roasted mottled browns and blacks - is also inspired by traditional utilitarian Japanese tea pots.
Göran Bäck (1923–2003) was one of Finland's leading ceramic artists of the 20th century. He was part of the Nordic design tradition aiming to produce beautiful everyday goods for everybody, which is what his 'Kaarna Tea Pot' embodied, the pot looked like it was turned by hand but in fact they were industrially made meaning more could be produced and more people could afford them. After working as a thrower at his sister's pottery studio, Göran worked for the Arabia factory for more than 35 years.
