A truly beautiful poster from the dawn of professional soccer!
The poster was made to advertise a sports documentary which was released in the U.S. as "Heading for Glory" and this is the French version with French text.
The championship was won by host nation (West Germany) beating the Netherlands in the final, 2–1. The victory was the second for West Germany (who had also won in 1954 and the European Championship of 1972).
The first goal was scored by the Netherlands - in the first minutes of the match the legendary Johan Cruyff was alone with the ball when he was tackled in the penalty area (some suggest that Cruyff was outside the area). Anyhow the Dutch player Johan Neeskens made it 1-0.
26 minutes after West Germany were awarded a penalty, after Bernd Hölzenbein fell within the Dutch penalty area, causing English referee Jack Taylor buy to award another controversial penalty. Paul Breitner spontaneously decided to kick, and scored! These two penalties were the first in a World Cup final.
West Germany now pushed forward, and in the 43rd minute another soccer legend, Gerd Müller, scored what turned out to be the winning goal, and the last of his career as he retired from the national team.
