DETAILS

Our pottery is unique, beautiful, and functional. Several views are given for this red, black, and gold layered glaze bowl. It is a nice size for serving being 10 inches in diameter and 4 inches in height. It is also a decorative piece. It has flowing glazes that give a unique look to the piece. The reds and gold mix together nicely and the gold flows down over the black giving a tan cast to the black. The bowl is food safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher safe. However, it is suggested to wash by hand since it is a unique item and is ceramic.

CREATION

Glaze layering is a technique by which many different buy glazes are added in layers of varying thicknesses and widths to a ceramic piece. The layers have one or more glazes that are high in fluxes which cause the layers to flow by gravity when heated to a high temperature. Most of the glaze layering is done at Cone 6 or above. That is 2232 degrees Fahrenheit and above. As the flux glaze flows it takes those in layers above and below it along with it in the flow. This mixes the glazes along with their colors. The layers generally are of different thicknesses depending on the amount of flow desired. The more of the flowing glazes that are added the larger the flow. The fluxed glaze can be put above or below the other glazes in thickness or in height on the surface giving different effects. Often the outcome occurs with a bit of luck as well as skill. Some pieces look awful and others are simply amazing.

The bowl before glazing was thrown on a potter's wheel, fired once (bisque firing), sanded, and then glazed and fired (glaze firing)

MATERIALS

The bowl is stoneware which allows it to be vitrified in firing so that it does not absorb water. The glazes are all commercial food safe glazes.

TECHNIQUE AND DESIGN

It takes a lot of time to decided on the technique and to apply the glazes so the effect is as desired. It is a very creative effort and is very much like artistic painting. It does remind me of Ginger Rogers when it is stated that in dancing she just followed along with Fred Astaire except backwards and in high heels. The art of glaze layering is done without really knowing what colors, flows, and final effect will occur when the piece is fired at 2200 degrees or above. That is really, really hot.
