Title: Avanyu - new warm colors

The Tewa word for Rain serpent or plumbed serpent is Avanyu. This traditional design is found decorating the black-on-black pottery of the Tewa speaking Pueblos of the Rio Grande. I have three variations of this painting; this is called natural because of the colors. Within the Avanyu is the sacred night sky with floating Bear track designs, the Bear is symbolic for strength and healing. To the left and right are squash blossom designs and along the top and bottom borders are traditional cloud designs and a Sun symbol directly above and center.
I am from San Ildefonso Pueblo, have been painting for over 40 years and buy I am one of many artistically gifted Great Grandchildren of famed Potter Maria Martinez.
