Bettina, my daughter as you may know was an avid spinner, knitter and buy a member of Ravelry under the name of Anitteb. She was also a microbiologist with a PhD, raised snakes and did belly dancing with her snakes. She was married to Nathan, and had a shar-pei dog named Rip (Ripple). She died three years ago on December 16 2014 from breast cancer at the age of 31. She had the BRCA2 gene mutation that she inherited from her mom, who had breast cancer at the age of 24 and then died at the age of 52 from ovarian cancer. The SAL will celebrate Bettina's life.
Bettina as a small child, enamored of horses, immersed in Greek mythology one day expressed the wish that she could recreate Pegasus, the winged white stallion: a leap of pure vision, a declaration of hope and faith without any boundaries, without any limitation brought on by the relentless grind of life.
As she grew up her wish morphed into a dedication to realize her wish. She decided in part to become a microbiologist so she would have the necessary knowledge and science to manipulate molecules and cells to assist her in creating her Pegasus.
As time slipped on, as she lost her mom to overian cancer Pegasus became for her the symbol of creating solutions to life's problem: how to overcome the awful knowledge that the future may bring for her and for her yet unrealized yet dreamed of children the terrible reality of breast cancer, ovarian cancer due to inheriting from her mom and passing on the genetic mutation of BRCA2.
When she was diagnosed that the feared breast cancer has arrived her Pegasus project sprung into action. She had her eggs harvested and with the help of her husband made viable some 20 embryos, half of which tested negative for BRCA2: Pegasus, wings flapped, took off into a future free of cancer.
Even though time for her ran short, her Pegasus continues to fly high in the sky, riding the uplifting current of Bettina's Rainbow pointing out a path for all the other BRCA2 victims to follow: how the inexorable chain of genetic inheritance can be defeated.
Please sing the story of Bettina's Pegasus so that every mother and daughter may hear it clear and loud.
All Mirkwood spindles feature Infinitip technology - a stainless steel ball bearing in the spinning tip. Any given point of a sphere is almost infinitely small to give you the tiniest point of contact between the spindle and your spinning surface. As the tip is a sphere, no matter what angle you spin at you are always experiencing minimal contact between the spindle and dish, giving you a smooth, near-frictionless spin.
Mirkwood spindles come with two flicking tip options - crowned or pointed. The crowned spindles have a slender flicking zone topped by a flared tip in to which a genuine 4.8mm Swarovski crystal or a 6.0mm faceted gemstone has been set. Mirkwood spindle users have reported that the crowned tip is just as easy to use as a pointed tip and the glittering crystal is beautiful to behold.
