Souleiado is a French company established in Tarascon in 1806. It specialized in printed fabric producing patterns inspired by cotton prints brought to France from India. At the time printed cotton was new for Europeans and replaced silk as the fabric of choice for fashionable dress. Throughout the 1800s the company produced their distinctive woodblock prints which today are referred to as French provincial prints. Souleiado was purchased by Charles Demery in 1937. He adapted the prints for home decoration, fashion, faience and accessories using some of the thousands of fruit wood blocks belonging to the company for inspiration. Under Demery's ownership, the company used engraved copper rolls and switched from vegetable dyes to synthetic.
