This manatee mama and baby set depicting a precious moment together was created by me in my home studio. The mama manatee measures 10 x 5 x .5 inches and the baby is 5.25 x 3 x .5 inches. Working by hand in stoneware clay I roll out a slab, cut and form it, shape and pinch it. Then I smooth the pieces and add contours and wrinkles, eyes and flippers, using my fingers and a variety of ceramic tools. I pay careful attention buy to detail in every piece I make. When my creations are dry I brush on glazes and fire them to a cone 6 (2232º Fahrenheit) in the kiln.
My art is greatly influenced by my love of nature and its forms. I have been creating animals in clay since I was a child alongside my mother, a potter extraordinaire. My pieces are all hand made so there will be some variations, particularly in the coloring. Also keep in mind that colors may vary slightly from how they appear in the images you are viewing. Coated wire is installed in the back, making it ready to hang on any hook or nail.
