Hand Dyed Silk Scarf - Snowflakes on a Stormy Blue Night - Crepe De Chine Silk Scarf by buy Laura Elderton (approx. 8x54 inches)
This small Crepe De Chine silk scarf tells the story of a stormy snowy night.
This small Crepe De Chine silk scarf tells the story of a stormy snowy night. The background is navy blue like a cold winter sky. There is lots of tones of blues, grays and whites to compliment the winter wardrobe.
I brush in the dyes - this allows me to control the shading of the colour. I then use wax to capture and save the colour before the next dye application. This creates multiple layers of colour and patterns. After I finish with the artwork, the wax is mostly ironed out and then “steamed” buy to set dyes on a molecular level, leaving only the feeling of silk. From then on the silk scarves can easily be hand washed.
The snowflakes designs are done with three Mulberry Paper Stencils that I hand cut over 25 years ago. Hot bees wax is stamped through the Stencil creating the resist design. You may notice a fine grid on the snowflakes, it's an imprint of the fine silk mesh holding the Stencil together, it always amazes me how delicate and detailed the design is despite the use of molten wax.
