Shoulder bag purse made from a Vintage Handwoven Guatemala Mayan Huipil from Chichicastenango with a lovely bold floral design. The bottom, accents and handle are brown leather - more suede-ish. The interior is cloth and has one small zippered compartment. Each side of the bag has compartments for keys or eyeglasses. The weaving on each side was done by the women on a back strap loom. The colorful flowers, symbols, figures all have a special meaning that is unique to their region and culture. The textile part of this purse is an authentic woven Huipil. A Huipil is a hand loomed, woven and embroidered blouse or top that the indigenous women wear. It can take 2 to 3 month to finish. It made from usually 2 or 3 long pieces put together. ( the pieces are limited by the size of the back strap looms they use. That is why they need to use more that one piece). A hole is made for the head. The neckline will indicate the marital status of the women buy. Frequently there head hole is decorated with the sign of the Sun as this one does - you can see the points of the sunburst in dark pink on the left hand side of the purse in the first picture. The leather is brown but the base color of the huipil is black and it have different shades of pink from light to dark and well as different shades of green. The flowers are on both sides of the purse. The colors is the photos are bright but it is a little more subdued in person. Purse measures approximately 14" across and 9-1/2" high not including straps.
