The Kelpies are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures depicting kelpies, located between Falkirk and Grangemouth, standing next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and near River Carron.

A kelpie is a shape-changing aquatic spirit of Scottish legend. ... Once trapped in this way, the kelpie will drag the child into the river and then eat him. These water horses can also appear in human form. They may materialize as a beautiful young woman, hoping to lure young men to their death.

These fantastic sculptures can be seen from the surrounding countryside, including the motorway that passes close to their location. And even better you can get up close to them on a pathway built for that very purpose.


It is hard to convey the sense of scale on the enormous power that they convey. The sculptures are 30 metres high and they have a mystical almost spiritual quality. They have been much visited since they were installed in 2014.

The brainchild of the sculptor Andy Scott, The Kelpies represent the lineage of the heavy horse of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the wagons, ploughs, barges, and coal ships that shaped this part of Scotland.

When Andy set out to design his sculpture of the mythical water horses based on the old working horses of Scotland's waterways, he used two real life models. Duke and Baron are two Scottish born and bred working Clydesdale horses that still ply their trade in a field near Glasgow.
