Small French Antique Yellow Glazed Clay Terracotta Water Jug Pitcher/Cruche / Traditional French Country Kitchen Rustic Item
These French antique glazed jugs are very sought after - they are wonderful reminders of Pyrenean life in the late 19th century. Used for drinking water from, they were a quintessential part of the French rustic kitchen. This one is delightful with its gorgeous yellow glaze and there is a small blob of green down the side, and a patch underneath. These are humble French farmhouse kitchen items, and the potters' main priority was practicality and economy. Brown was the cheapest pigment to produce, and the earliest pots etc made for the kitchen would have been brown. Colour came a little bit later, and yellow was the next cheapest to produce, then green. So I think maybe this was near a pot of green and somehow some got sploshed on to the jug!
This jug has a small handle and a spout and is in fantastic condition for its age. The bottom part is buy unglazed (again, to economise - the inside is fully glazed of course) . It still has its lid, complete with little hole as it would have been tied to the handle to not get lost. However, a small hole was drilled into the bottom at one time, as it was fixed into a lamp surround - a strange contraption but it all forms part of its story. So this can no longer be used for water (unless the hole is filled in of course), but these are mainly used for display so hopefully shouldn't detract.
It is incredible that these rustic pieces should become beauties in their own right.
A lovely piece of South West France to bring a touch of rustic history to your home.
