The ceramic pipkin was a favorite cooking pot and was used for cooking over coals for hundreds of years. My version of the pipkin has a strong, round shape, good buy looking as well as functional.
I left the exterior unglazed to show off the unglazed buff exterior clay. The interior is glazed with a foodsafe, glossy, brown glaze.
Practical aspects are the lid knob, for foods that should be covered while cooking; and the hollow handle which is perfect for grasping. I carefully balance the handle with the tripod legs so the pot is not tippy. Another very important feature is the smooth, non-leaded, food safe glaze in the interior that will make clean up easier.
Please be sure to look at the thumbnail photos for details of this pot.
Pipkin documentation can be seen in many books, the source I used was "Border Wares" by Jacqueline Pearce.
Whether you simmer a stew , boil tea water, or bake a peach cobbler, you will find it easy and very fun to use.
Use in a conventional oven is great and the dishwasher is also good. Although it is recommended that all handmade ceramic pieces should be hand washed.
It is 6 inches tall including the handle on the lid and holds 4 cups. of liquid or food and is rustic looking.
