Title: Refuge from the Storm- Rail Tunnel Arizona

The "Rail buy Tunnel", located in the Tonto National Forest, was a failed attempt to dig a train tunnel from Pine, Arizona to the north, bypassing the Mogollon Rim... but it failed. What is left was this refuge from the elements.

On the last day of a solo adventure on the Arizona Trail, after being soaked for 3 days by the August monsoons, I was dispirited, tired, and dangerously cold... Searching my map, I found something marked "Rail Tunnel" and decided to seek refuge there.

What I found was amazing. A tunnel that only reached a hundred feet into the granite face of the cliff. Old fire rings. And a dry spot away from the rain. I spent 3 hours pacing for warmth while I waited out the storm and killed the last few hours before I was to be picked up... I will always remember how cold and thankful I was to find this refuge from the storm.
