Sunbonnet Sue — imitated under a host of other names and an imitation herself — is a popular illustration on quilts, embroideries, curtains and many other decorative or practical cloth materials. Although the earliest known image of Sunbonnet Sue dates to 1902, her history tracks back through the Sunbonnet Babies to the late nineteenth century and the artwork of Kate Greenaway of Victorian England.
In the late nineteenth century, magazines, newspapers, and book publishers did not have the ability to reproduce photographs. Instead, they illustrated their publications with drawings. Editors filled this need by hiring commercial artists. Catherine (Kate) Greenaway (1846-1901) was one of these commercial artists.
In addition to her talents as an illustrator, Kate was a poet. Her first book of poetry was a bestseller. Kate often drew images of young children and was especially interested in drawing their attire. She did not originate the Sunbonnet Babies or Sunbonnet Sue but her work strongly influenced Bertha Louise Corbett (1872-1950) who did create the Sunbonnet Babies in her 1900, self-published book. Sunbonnet Sue's history seems to start in 1902 which indicates it is probably an imitation of the Sunbonnet Babies concept.
The illustrations in Bertha Corbett's self-published book led her to a meeting with Eulalie Osgood Grover, a writer of children's books. An editor introduced Bertha to Eulalie. The two women were favorably impressed with each other's work and collaborated to write the Sunbonnet Babies Primer in 1902. Eulalie Grover wrote the text. Ms. Corbett illustrated the book with her Sunbonnet Babies. Eulalie interspersed occasional rhymes throughout the text.
