This is a nice Stanley No. 813 10 inch bit brace. As one of Stanley's best braces, It has the metal clad ball bearing head, the universal jaws, and a ball bearing chuck. Along with a smoothly running boxed ratchet.
The rosewood wrist handle and top pad are solid, although the wrist handle has a lot of dings.
A nice feature of the universal jaws is the ability to hold round shank drill bits from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch and also the smaller Morse taper bits. That, along with the ball bearing chuck, allows you to get a really good grip on the drill shanks.
As you can see in the pictures, the nickel plating buy On the frame is only about half there, maybe less. There is no rust or pitting, even on the chuck.
Stanley offered these from 1911-1947. This particular example was probably made between 1929-1932 as it is equipped with Austin Stowell's ball bearing chuck that was patented in 1932(no. 1,880,521).
The chuck is marked Pat. Pending which usually indicates that it was made from around the date the patent was applied for, in this case September 13, 1929, and the issue date of October 4, 1932.
A good solid user! And a nice piece of history.
