Up for sale is a pair (2) of 6" vases with handles hand decorated (underglaze) by Edith West Erwin. I found these vases at an estate sale, that I recently attended, being held by one of our local museums. When I first handled these vases I knew they were from the late Victorian era, and were part of the china decorating craze that was sweeping America at the time, but I didn't know how special they were until I got them home and was able to examine them more carefully. When buy I bought these vases I thought that the center portrait on each vase was an underglaze transfer. It wasn't until I was able to examine them with a magnifying glass that I realized that the tiny 3" by 2.5" portrait on each vase was completely rendered by hand as were all of the flowers bordering the portraits. The quality and detail of the artwork on these vases is astounding. One of the vases also contained a hand written note indicating that these vase were decorated by Edith West Erwin. After doing some research online I was able to gather more information about Mrs. Erwin. Edith West was born in 1854 and passed (as Edith Erwin) in 1940. Mrs. Erwin lived her entire life in the state of Wisconsin. The back of the hand written note has a short family tree which helped me to positively identify Mrs. Erwin. Another interesting bit of information from the family tree is that Mrs. Erwin's family at one point included the surname Stangl. I'm not sure if they were related to the same Stangl's of New Jersey pottery fame but I still thought it was interesting. These two vases are in very good condition with no cracks, crazing, or repairs. I would be listing these vases as excellent if not for a tiny chip on the foot of the blue vase. The sale of these vases will, of course, include the handwritten note and family tree.
