SHADOW BOXES WITH SPEAR POINT AND BIRD POINTS

Handmade and finished in our shop with various styles of arrowheads and spear points. Spear points are placed on the long staff that was carried into battle and when the user was in the presence of dangerous animals. Bird points were used with buy the bow for hunting small animals such as rabbits, squirrels and birds like turkeys and grouse. The rear of each box has a description of which kinds of points are contained in the box and what time period they were in use. This varies from 1,000 years ago to 14,000 years ago. This spear point has a third notch at the rear and can be fastened by that notch to a handle to be used as a knife blade.

It is believed from historical records, that bird points were also used on atlatl darts. Atlatls were used for 30,000 years before the bow and arrow came into use. Atlatl darts were usually a two-piece large arrow that had the point affixed to the front piece. Shortly after it was thrown the rear half would drop away from the front half and could be reused time after time. This way the hunter could carry several shafts and maybe a dozen front halves with points. The hunter now was not carrying several four-foot long darts but the two-piece version, which could be carried in his quiver. We hope to offer for sale an atlatl with directions of how to use them later this year.

Each one is different with arrowheads and spear points from my private collection of over 30,000 American Indian artifacts gathered over the last 65 years in more than thirty states and five Canadian Provinces. I bought a few collections and individual pieces, which I grew fond of.

This model shadow box is 6x6 inches and is 2 3/4 inches deep. The box is made from western white cedar that was used for many tools. Even the bark was peeled and made a part of the shelter. The inner bark was used alongside the skins of animals for clothing.

They can be hung on the wall or used as small book ends. They weigh less than one pound each so they will not hold back a set of encyclopedias.

We will be offering other sizes later this year, which are 6x12 inches and possibly a 12x12 inches.

We will also be offering 6x6 inch fossil shadow boxes and Civil War relic boxes.
