A hand made leather sheath to fit an Echo 5 Dogwood Custom Knives fixed blade knife.
******* Knife shown is not for sale.*********
The sheath is is 8 1/2" long and 2 " wide.
8-9 oz., 3mm brown vegetable tanned leather is wet molded to create a custom fit for this knife. This entails creasing and shaping the wet leather cutout around the knife for an hour or so.
2 more pieces of leather are cut and wetted to form the belt loop and retention strap.
After the shaping is complete, the leather is set aside for one day to totally dry out.
2 Solid brass Chicago screws are used to attach the sheath to the belt loop, and close the loop at the bottom. The belt loop opening will accept a 2 1/2" wide belt.
Then a welt is fitted snug, next to the edge of the knife, and to the edge of the sheath. Once the welt is fitted, it is cut and glued inside the sheath, using Barge's shoe cement.
Once the cement is dry on the welt, Ritza 25 Tiger thread from Germany, is used to hand sew a saddle stitch, to secure the welt in place along the edge of the sheath.
2 more Chicago screws are attached at both ends of the welt.
Then the screw threads are treated with Permatex high buy strength thread locker.
2 solid brass heavy duty snaps are added to to the 1 3/4" wide retention strap. The strap is not attached to the sheath. It is able to move some, but is a very tight fit.
After all the assembly is done, Obenhauf's natural oils with beeswax is applied to the leather, then Fiebing's dark brown dye is rubbed into the leather for a luster finish.
All the edges of the leather are treated with Fiebing's dark brown edge kote.
*This sheath can be made for a left hand orientation, black leather and with different color thread.
