From the Publisher's Preface

According to the terms of Alfred Nobel's bequest, the Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded each year "to the person who shall have produced ... the most distinguished body of work of an idealistic tendency." Relatively few American authors have won the Nobel Prize since buy the awards were instituted at beginning of this century. John Steinbeck, who received the honor in 1962, was the sixth, his predecessors having been Sinclair Lewis, Eugene O'Neill, Pearl Buck, William Faulker, and Ernest Heminway.

The Pulitzer Prizes have been distributed annually since 1917. Steinbeck won his in 1940 for 'The Grapes of Wrath.' Three years earlier a dramatic version of his novella, 'Of Mice and Men', had received the Drama Critics Circle award. Few books have achieved the stature of a classic in so short a period as 'Of Mice and Men.' The simple-minded giant, Lennie Small, his compassionate friend George Martin, and their tragic tale - of best-laid plans that went 'agley' - are among the most unforgettable creations in American literature.
