Silkroad, Bukhara Uzbekistan to Venice Italy “The origin and story of Ikat”
Uzbekistan and Venice once offered something very similar to the world. Both served as important hubs in a trade network that connected East buy and West, a position that enabled them to enrich themselves with arts, crafts and cultures.
Bukhara was a major point in the Silk Road and one of the most important knots in the textile. Through the caravans, ikat made its way into the life of Uzbeks and, by the 18th century, became a highly prized item reserved for the royalty and upperclass. Only the most skilled artisans were allowed to produce ikat and it was them who gave the art of ikat its unique identity.
The country's double landlocked position and its mountainous terrain helped preserve the art of ikat. And revive the traditional techniques using natural fibers and natural dyes.
Design of fabrics are a phenomenon of popular art and attracts by the beauty of colours, pure and plain dyes. Most used patterns are moon, butterflies, amulets, scorpions, combs, almonds, trees, horns, sneak trails.
The process of ikat fabrics
Ikat is the method of making fabric in which the pattern is created before weaving with the resist-dyeing process of the yarn. They are warp dyed, which means the warp is manipulated to create the pattern. silk threads give ikat its perfect shine. The weavers can create many patterns out of memories. They can also come up with new design ideas and lay them out on a 2×2m frame. Bundle the yarns and draws the pattern with a sharpened stick dipped in oil. Wraps the dye resistant threats bundles of cotton soaked in wax at specific spots. Yarn is transferred to the dye bath. After each colour the bundles left to dry. Different temperature or conditions required different colours. The yarn bundles are tied to the frame. A line repeating every two meters or so in the final woven fabric. This line is an inevitable feature of ikat weaving. For velvet ikats a fine wire is woven along the weft with every fly of the shuttle. The weaver will then use a blade to cut along those wires to create the “pile.
This process only allows to produce less than 40 inches of fabric a day. Each pillow you buy takes at least half day of artisanship. We are supplying our fabrics only from the best authentic local weavers.
Each of our pieces is individually handcrafted, with all elements from handwoven fabrics to sewing details hand-done by skilled craftsmen. This process results in natural variations from piece to piece, which are expected and contribute to the unique beauty of our pillows.
