Handicraft of the Kajood (ผลิตภัณฑ์จากกระจูด) is a Thai traditional basketry and tinted which originated from the southern part of Thailand. It's OTOP products in Thailand. It is a unique handicraft famous of Southerner which is in 5 stars OTOP product "Krajood" is a biennial plant the name of science is Lepironia articulata, family Cyperanceae. Its truck like "papyrus" high about 1-2 meters. It has cluster flowers, it often found in flooding area found in the south of Thailand. The "Krajood" is the same plant family, "Kok" (Sedge). Krajood is circular hollow stem are jointed and having a thin web inside, diameter of stem is about 1/8 - 4/16 inches or about the pencil size and about 1-3 meters tall, having flower in a cluster on the side of stem. It is growing in the pond or anywhere having water still and ocean mud especially the south of Thailand. Its origin is in the Madagascar Island, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, Malayu Peninsula and other islands, Indochina, countries of Pacific Rim such as Hong Kong, Borneo and Eastern coast of Australia. Southern people of Thailand use Krajood for making the mat weaving, bag weaving, tied rope weaving, agricultural sack bag weaving and other items. The process of mat weaving is different from other mat weavings. The villagers will bring the stem of Krajood mixed with white clay first and dry in the sunlight and then pound the stem till flat to soften it. For extra colors, it will be dyed before weaving.
