This is a tropical rain forest species is not expected to tolerate cool or cold temperatures and drought.
This species is native to tropical Asia.
Keppel is an erect, evergreen beautiful ornamental tree with its new leaves changing from light pink into a burgundy red colour before turning a brilliant green. Grows in deep, moist clay soils in secondary forest in Java.
Fruit is juicy, the orange pulp is sweet and fragrant, the flavor is said to resemble coconut and papaya. The round fruits are borne on the trunks of the tree (similar to jaboticabas). The fruit is 5 - 6cm in diameter.
It is claimed that, after eating these aromatic fruits, one's whole body is permeated with the smell of roses. Another report says that all bodily excretions, including sweat and urine, smell strongly of violets.
The fruit pulp is a diuretic and is used to prevent and treat kidney inflammation. It is said to cause temporary sterility in women.
Hence it served aristocratic ladies as a perfume and a family-planning agent. In Java its use was traditionally restricted to the consorts of the sultan of Jogja.
The wood is suitable for household articles; the straight trunk, after immersion in water for several months, is used in house building and is said to last for more than 50 years.
Kepel is super rare in the continental US, although you can find fruiting trees in Southern Florida.
Seed germination takes up to a year, seeds must be very fresh and young seedlings grow very slowly.
I do not have many seedlings to offer this year but possibly more of them will sprout and will be offered for sale in 2020.
In my experience it is quite easy to grow after it passes germination and young seedling stage. High humidity and good watering is important.
Must have for the rare tropical fruiting trees collector!
Trees grown from seeds are not identical to the parent tree.
Grown organically in Florida.
Pictures are from my garden of the actual plants that I grew.

Small plants need protection from cold, wind, sun, dry-out.
Place all plants in a spot of moderate temperatures (70-80F) in good light but NOT in a direct sun for two weeks until they adjust from shipping in darkness . NO direct sun, NO partial shade - FULL SHADE ONLY! Sun will burn small plants! Allow the plants a week or two to adjust to their new home before transplanting or fertilizing. If you plan to plant them in the garden, gradually increase their exposure to sunlight and outdoor conditions! Temperatures falling below 60F can result in plant damage.
