Vintage Bisque Head Doll, buy Leather Body, Wiefel & Co., Germany, Glass Eyes, Teeth, AS IS

Antique Wiefel & Company (W & C) bisque head doll with an original leather body that was made in Germany, buy circa the 1920s. The back of her bisque head is incised with 250 4/0, W & C, Germany. Her leather body has a metal gusset and pin joints at the hips for easy sitting. The sitting mechanism works as it should. Her knees are designed to bend slightly. This stunningly beautiful doll has dark brown glass eyes with a fully operational eye mechanism. She has a slightly open mouth with 4 teeth. She also has a little dimple on her chin, soft cherry red lips, sleepy eyes, hand-painted wisps of eyelashes, and dark brown eyebrows. She is tightly stuffed with what we believe is straw with no leakage. She has a long brown wig that is styled in lovely curls. It is thick and in very nice condition. We believe it is human hair, but not positive and cannot definitively know if it is original to the doll. She is wearing nylon ivory-colored socks.

Her bisque head is in good condition with one small hairline crack at the center base. It does not show at all when the head is attached to the body.

NOTE: This doll is being sold AS IS because the head needs to be reattached or reglued to the body as it has come loose over time. This is an easy repair for a doll repair person. There is also a small chip on one of her left fingers; otherwise, her hands are in very good condition. Consideration of these factors are reflected in the pricing.

This antique Wiefel doll has bisque arms and fingers that are securely attached just below the elbow with leather that is stitched with red thread. Her arms are loosely sewn onto the interior portion of her body. The leather torso is also in excellent condition and is still soft and supple.

In 1912 Erste Steinbacher Porzellanfabrik Company was sold to Hugo Wiefel and renamed Wiefel & Company. The new doll mark of W & Co or W & C was used with and without a doll mold number. By 1914 Wiefel's manufacturing was shut down because of World War I and restarted again in 1918, although it doesn't appear that bisque doll heads were resumed being made until around 1923.
