Renowned for his controversial ideas on schooling and religion,Thomas Arnold was a prominent and influential figure in the history of British education. He served as the Head buy of Rugby School for over a decade (Where he introduced a number of reforms that were widely copied by other prestigious public schools) and also served as the Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford in the final year of his life.
Arthur Penrhyn Stanley was the leading liberal theologian of his time in England and author of a number of popular works on Church History. However, his literary reputation was first established by this work of biography, published in 1844. Stanley was himself educated at Rugby School under Thomas Arnold, making him a notable authority on his life.
