Huichol (self-designation wixaritari “real people”) is an Native American people that lives in the center and in the west of Mexico.
Huichi crafts: patterned weaving, weaving and beadwork have become known throughout the world. Their photos are full of internet. Huichi paintings have been repeatedly shown in galleries in Europe, the USA and Russia.
Most of the Indians in the tribe can neither write nor read. However, Huichol sacredly cherish their centuries-old traditions, passing them from generation to generation.
But although quite a lot is known about this tribe, however, the Huicholis are one of the most closed peoples.
At first glance at the creations of the Huichi Indians, the question may arise: “where does such a riot of colors come from?”, Everything buy is quite simple: Huichols live in Mexico, where nature itself is so bright that you don't have to invent anything.
Of course, from ancient times, products were not so bright, they were previously decorated with pebbles, pieces of bone, corals, clay, shells, stones and seeds were used, painted with natural colors.
But the popularization of multicolor beads from Europe has noticeably modernized the work of the Wicholi tribe masters: a large abundance of flowers and shades of small glass beads allows the Indians to fully convey the diversity of their visions.
Over the past decades, many Huichols have moved to cities such as Nayarit, Mexico City, Tepic and Guadalajara. It was thanks to them that society drew attention to the rich culture of this people.
