This is a heavy, long-handled mallet for larger mortising and rough shaping work, or for setting garden or surveying stakes, or... it does look amazing at rest on a shelf. I made 4, kept one for myself and gave one as a gift. I'm a carpenter and I love chisel work, and none of my chisels is ever without a wooden mallet. I rarely have the opportunity to use this model as it's larger than I usually need for my mostly finish carpentry, and aside from that I'm just not a large person. But I have used it for setting wooden stakes for signs and garden with great success. And pleasure, I might add. Would be a memorable heirloom-quality gift for the land surveyor in your life.
The head is a 2-piece laminate block of Maple butcher-block slab. It's tenoned through in 4 places to guarantee it cannot delaminate, and is pinned and glued to the handle internally with another center tenon through it all. The adhesive is an extreme-strength, polyurethane construction adhesive, utterly waterproof and tougher than nails. The long handle was ripped and then hand-planed from split red oak firewood. This thing is tough. Even the hanging-loop mortise is lined with copper, which is also glued in place with the same PU construction adhesive and finished with a heavy counterbore bit to keep the metal edge burr-free for a lifetime. The chamfer on the grip ends before the end of the handle so your hand knows before you get there.
The grip is hand-textured with a hand-saw, and the whole tool is finished with an oil-based penetrating wood stain, then the primary head faces resanded to keep that great maple color visible.
This thing is made to last a lifetime.
