Although this is a Japanese *geisha (see info below), the porcelain pendant was hand-crafted, hand-painted, and rimmed in gold in Jingdezhen, China where buy they have been making these for many, many years. This is a copy of an old ukiyo-e, the famous Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period (1603 - 1868.)

She is painted in a green and blood red kimono and has the fancy hairdo of a geisha or courtesan. She has brought her hand to her mouth, perhaps surprised at seeing something or acting coy.

I used turquoise and large vintage red lucite beads. The smaller red beads are called "pony" beads - very old glass beads from Murano Island in Venice, Italy. The corrugated metal beads and the rectangular toggle clasp are gold-plated. The earring wires are gold vermeil (a heavy coating of gold over sterling silver.)

necklace: 15" (38cm)
pendant: 2" x 1" (5 x 2.5cm)
Price includes earrings.

*Geisha are only Japanese. They are well trained in the arts and conversation, and are highly respected in Japan. They are becoming increasingly rare now, found mainly in Kyoto. In Tokyo where I lived for three years in the early 90s, I saw a few geisha at a Kabuki performance, and once in a private box with rich business men at a sumo tournament.

Be sure to check out my other Japanese geisha/beauties in the section "Japan and China." Many of my Japanese necklaces were sold at the San Diego Museum of Art during a wonderful old ukiyo-e (woodblock print) exhibition.

To see interesting things from my past - travel treasures, vintage jewelry and clothing, unusual home collectibles, etc., go to my other shop - SandraDestash.etsy.com. There are many things from Japan in that shop, some from my time living there.
