This is a one-off design of four Silver Birch leaves, framed in scorched timber and grouted as a mosaic.

I start my process by rolling out clay and pressing in a leaf or leaves, getting a good definition of the veins and textures.
I have to leave the clay for some time to allow it to dry a little and firm up, enough so I can deeply incise the outlines around the leaf and connecting Mosaic design. If the clay is too soft it rucks up and ruins the details.
After the tile has completely dried and had the leaf/leaves removed, it is biscuit fired. Then a number of different oxides are used to bring out the detail on the surface. The glaze is put on the surrounding ‘mosaic' pieces.
The tile is stoneware fired to 1260°C.
To make the frame I first measure the tile and cut lengths of reclaimed wood to fit.
The timber is scorched using a plumbers blowtorch, then wire brushed and sanded to reveal the natural beauty of the grain.
The frame and tile are mounted onto a backboard, which is covered, and then the tile is grouted to give it the Mosaic effect.

The overall frame size of this piece of work is approximately 19.5cm X 19cm.

Mounting
The finished work is quite heavy, so will need to be mounted on a substantial picture hook or large screw.
