The Tiger Swallowtail was captured in the woods behind my house where the wild flowers attract them. One day I caught one taking its time feasting on nectar and took the opportunity to snap away some photos. I wanted to catch it in flight and finally did. Through some digital enhancement and some encaustic wax I created magic.
Processing a photo transfer involves laying the reversed image down on birch board treated with encaustic gesso and layers of acrylic matte medium. The image is laid down on the substrate, gently rubbed and allowed to dry overnight. The next buy day I spray a fine mist of water over the piece to just wet the paper and begin to rub it off. What remains is the ink from the photo, which I then cover with multiple layers of encaustic medium.
