Francis D. Davis (1920 – 1999) was best known for his wildlife portraits and fishing scenes – his reputation as an illustrator extended across the United States and his original paintings are sought after by collectors. He spent most of his life in rural Sullivan County, New York leaving only to study art in California under world famous artists and completing his formal art education at the Art Center School in Los Angeles. He illustrated more than a dozen books and hundreds of magazine articles and cover. He was considered and an expert in the field of horse packing and his book is still sought by those who enjoy traveling in the wilderness with pack horses. He and his wife were active members of the New York State Horse Council and strong promoters of the development of horse trails. Through their efforts, horse trails were established throughout New York in areas such as the Catskill and Adirondack Parks. From his studio in the Catskill Mountains, near Long Eddy, New York he was one of the original Catskill Guardians, a group of dedicated environmental protectionists.

Condition: Decorative, unclipped, dustjacket is in good condition with only slight edge curl along the top and bottom with some sun fading also along the top and bottom. The cover has nicely protected the bright tan hardbound boards with a darker brown spine. Silver embossed titles on the spine. Spine and boards are in excellent condition with no wear, no blemishes with corners that are sharp with no wear. The spine is straight and hinges are firmly attached to the endpapers. Text block is solid and all pages are firmly attached. The interior pages are clean with no tears, chips, creases or previous owner marks. 91 pages. Dimensions: H – 9-3/4” W – 9-1/4”.
