1861 Confederate Currency buy - Richmond - Civil War

The original 1861 hand signed “Twenty Dollars” Confederate note shows a seated woman (Industry) behind a large 20 with cupid and a beehive in the center. On the right side of the note is a seated woman (Hope) with an anchor and a palm tree. In the lower left corner of the note is a drawing of Alexander Stephens, Vice- President of the Confederate States. This note was printed with black ink on either plain or watermarked paper. The note was engraved by “B. Duncan Richmond” with the hand inscribed serial number is “111778” in red ink and is cut cancelled (two X's cut through note, left and right of center). There were about 200 different buy people who signed for each treasury official. For the most part they were women, many the wives or daughters of Confederate soldiers who had been killed in action.
