Pecan Hickory (Carya illinoinensis) is native to the south-central United States and Mexico. The trees grow to 130 feet with tree trunks of up to 4 feet in diameter. It is the state tree of Texas. The heartwood is light brown with a touch of red with much paler sapwood. It has a straight grain pattern, and wood may exhibit occasional curliness. Pecan comes under the category of non-durable hardwoods. Pecan is originally derived from a Native American word used to refer to any nut 'requiring a stone to crack'. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson planted Pecan trees in their gardens. Also used in smoking meats. Pecan nuts are popularly consumed throughout the United States and across the world.
A piece of wood's figure refers to the ability of the grain in the wood to catch and reflect light. This is a gross oversimplification, but easy to understand. Trees are basically big bundles of drinking straws, with the grain running along a board's length. Typically the grain runs straight up and down… but not always. Sometimes the wood grain will veer off a straight path. When a board is cut out of a log, any wood grain that isn't in the same plane as the saw blade will look like it's coming out of the board (because it basically is), which gives figure its three-dimensional effect. Curly figure results from the compression of the grain perpendicularly crossing the face of a board producing alternate stripes of hard and soft board fiber. This phenomenon creates a chatoyancy in the board varying in strength depending on the degree of compression leaving the viewer with the illusion of a three-dimensional surface.
