From the Publisher's Preface

Walter Scoot was born in 1771, in Edinburgh. In infancy he was afflicted with a fever which left him lame. He attended Edinburgh High School and University, studied law, and entered the bar in 1792. ... It was in 1805 that, while still practicing law, he wrote "The Lay of the Last Minstrel," a poem which was an immediate success. It was followed by even more popular poems "Marmion" (1808) and "The Lady of the Lake" (1810). By then he had given up the profession of the law.

Scott buy now turned to prose, and in 1814 produced "Waverly," the first of the long series of books that earned the author his reputation as the first great historical novelist. .. Until 1827 the novels were published anonymously.

Scott married in 1797, and 1812 he built a large estate Abbotsford. He was made a baronet in 1820. Overwork now began to take its toll ... the end came in September of 1832. An imposing monument to Sir Walter Scoot was erected in Edinburgh in 1846.
