"Sieza" style meditation bench. The user is in a modified kneeling position -- the bench relieves pressure on the feet and lower legs -- especially nice in for longer sessions. Personally, I like the symmetry of this body position....This is the "Standard" model, for users who tend to keep their legs parallel. If you are more likely to spread your knees apart, consider my newer "Flare" model.
I experimented with a variety of designs: fixed radius curve, angled legs, folding legs, etc. I decided on this version which has a few key features:
* The curve on the leg is based off a "French Curve" -- the radius actually changes as the angle of tilt changes. This means that proper tilt and spinal alignment occur naturally and with little effort. The seat is stable once you find your place, and there is little to no rocking.
* The bench surface is 21" x 7". Height from floor to surface of seat is 7.5" when the bench is horizontal to the floor, but that will vary as it is buy tilted on it's curved legs.
* The legs are fixed -- this item does not fold. After observing an accidental fold for a user (my wife!), I realized that a folding design seems convenient, but could be potentially dangerous.
* The joints are solid: the leg is glued into a slot ("dado"), and then 1/4" pegs are glued and inserted into an intersecting hole. This provides additional strength, as well as a visual highlight.
* Wood is White Pine, pegs are walnut. Whenever possible, I build from reclaimed lumber.
*Finish is food grade mineral oil. I chose this finish because it is safe, odorless and can easily be reapplied by the owner (it is available online if you search for "cutting board oil"). Simple wipe on, let sit, wipe off excess.
