When I visited my Oma this summer, she gave me an assortment of beads from broken bracelets and necklaces to use in my own creations. These beads were among that pile, and they were made a decade or so ago by Wilma, a lovely woman who used to be Oma's neighbour and who did raku firings in her backyard. I have paired these bright ceramic beads with hand-formed, soldered and texturized 925 silver rings and some tiny faceted apatite beads. The earring hooks are also 925 silver.
Raku firing is a process through which bisqued ceramic is glazed and fired to around 950 degrees celsius, and then- when the piece is glowing orange hot- it is placed into a metal container with flammable materials like sawdust and paper, and the container lid is sealed so the fire and smoke inside can work its magic. When the whole process is finished, each bead is covered with little buy black cracks in the glaze that come about through the shock and smoke of the raku process. As these beads lay flat on the kiln shelf, the bottoms of the beads were not glazed and are a smoky black. There might be some bigger black or spots on the bead, as well, where the glaze has come off when touched by tongs. This is all part of what makes each bead unique.
I made the bold choice to pile up these big beads so they are a heavier pair, with each earring weighing in at 13 grams. The earrings hang 8 centimetres from your pierced lobe, and they are truly one of a kind.
These are a pretty sturdy pair of earrings, but the beads are made of ceramic, so if you drop them onto a concrete or tiled floor, or toss them into a deep pocket in your purse and forget about them, or throw them down dramatically during a passionate debate, the earrings could damage or break. Also, with these raku-fired earrings, you probably don't want to wear them in the shower or swimming pool, or accidentally leave them in the pockets of your jeans swooshing around in the washing machine. Just sayin'. (Please feel free to contact me if you do indeed accidentally break them, and I will give you some tricks to help you fix them and get them looking as good as new!)
