This pot is hand-built, made from brown clay. I started hand building to move away from the symmetry of thrown pots, exploring forms that change depending on the angle of view.
The interior is glazed.
Process: I generally begin with a rectangular or irregularly shaped block of clay on a banding wheel. I'll create a hole down the center, then carve out chunks of clay from the exterior saving most for later patch work. After this is completed I will not work on the exterior any more. All of the shaping is done from the interior with a rib or sponge. Spinning the banding wheel and applying pressure from the inside, warps and fractures the exterior surface. I will use the carved-out pieces set aside earlier to patch any tears or holes buy that may appear. This adds another layer of texture to the piece. Some final cleanup is done, like smoothing out the interior, then it is set aside to dry. It is then bisque fired and a second firing after the glaze is applied.
