This chawan was handbuilt using the kurinuki method of carving objects out of a solid piece of clay.
Traditionally used as a vessel in the tea ceremony, but will still serve a great cup of coffee!
This handcrafted stoneware teabowl is made of iron bearing clay, and is fired up to Cone 10
(about 2350F, 1287C) in gas reduction. This clay is completely vitrified at this temperature an can safely be microwaved and washed in the dishwasher.
A combination of glaze, slips, salt and ash is layered on the surface of the pot in an attempt to bring the rich surface of traditional woodfired ceramics to the more controlled environment of the gas kiln.
The work I make is made using a mixture of Japanese ceramic traditions, and the surfaces I create for this series of work is inspired by deserts, stars, dust and the infinite debris of the cosmos.
