Vintage Afro-Brazilian Amulet Pin Slave Folk Art Penca De Balangandan. After doing a little bit of research I see that many people feel that these charms were a sign of good luck into ward off evil. These were worn as jewelry as well as accessories, sometimes hung on a door. They are from the 18th century and were made of brass or silver. The two birds facing each other represent a couple different meanings in Africa and Brazil, and it is also said that the two Birds capture the good energy. I purchased this at an estate sale it is 5 inches wide and 6 inches tall. Each individual charm varies but some are 3 and 1/2 inches and some are 2 inches.
