Madd (Saba senegalensis) is a plant species of the family Apocynaceae. It is a species of wild lianas that grows in African savannas and is grown as a shrub. Its fruit is called zaban (bambara or dioula), malombo or makalakonki (in the Congo Basin), madd (in Wolof) and weda (in Moore), or coastal (in Ivory Coast) and still "mkonkar" ( in Mandjak). It is a globose shell that contains seeds coated with very soft and juicy yellow pulp. They are tart and sweet. You can taste the fruit as is or season with sugar, salt and pepper. Mixed with water and sugar, the pulp gives a delicious juice. It is not advisable to swallow the seeds but the inside of the shell is covered with superficial skin that can be consumed.
