The artist was born in Kirov in 1937. After an early childhood in a family subjected to political repression, his parents moved with him to Kharkov when he was ten years old. There his father worked in a Malyshev factory. After completing the seventh grade, he decided to complete a flight training at the Kharkov Flight School. However, his class was scheduled after two years of training. In 1961 he graduated from the Kharkov Vocational School of Art, from 1964 to 1966 he studied art at the Kharkov Art Institute. In the sixties he became friends with the famous painters Vagrich Bakhchanyan (who later emigrated to the United States and collaborated there with the writers Sergei Dovlatov and Alexander Genis) and Evgenij Solovjov (who designed Kharkov's Pushkinskaya metro station). The three nonconformists defied the then prevailing realism with their own formalist approaches. Until the early seventies he worked as a painter and designer at Kharkov's Dramatic Pushkin Theatre, where he made a special contribution to the production of theatrical performances in collaboration with the famous painter Oleg Zelkov. From 1970 to 1989 he worked as a designer - mainly of posters - in Kharkov's artists' combine and for other institutions. Around this time he became friends with the painter Pavel Taiber. From 1990 to 1996 he worked as a painter and graphic artist in Kharkov's Tarash-Shevchenko Theatre of Ukrainian Drama buy.
