Mikasa Inc. began in 1936, under the name All Star Trading by Setsuo Aratani, a Japanese American. All Star focused on trading with Japan and was successful until hostilities between the two countries erupted in 1941. After WW11 Aratani re-opened his business and began focusing on importing China from Japan and in 1950 changed the company name to Mikasa, which means “three umbrellas” in Japanese. Mikasa Inc. remains a leader in casual dinnerware and unlike most of its competitors buy doesn't own manufacturing facilities but contracts out to 175 factories spanning 25 countries. This allowed Mikasa to introduce numerous patterns into the market each year and capitalize on the most popular. Mikasa Inc now distributes dinnerware through their own name as well as Christopher Stuart, Home Beautiful, and Studio Nova.
