In 1797 William Copeland became a partner in Spode with Josiah Spode (II) when Josiah Spode (I) died. In 1827 Josiah Spode (II) died and William Copeland's son William Taylor Copeland purchased the buy Spode business from the trustees of Josiah Spode (III). In 1833 William Taylor became sole owner, he then took on a partner Thomas Garrett, the company was known as “Copeland and Garrett” until 1847 after which the firm was solely run by William again. William Taylor Copeland's four sons joined the business in 1867 with control eventually resting with the youngest son Richard P Copeland. In 1932 the company became a private limited company under the name “W.T. Copeland & Sons Ltd”. The firm remained in control of the Copeland family until 1966, in 1970 to commemorate the original founder Josiah Spode the company reverted to the “Spode” name although the Spode brand name had been used throughout the history of the company.
