Vintage Carved Wooden Swedish Dala Horse.
The Dala Horse is traditionally a carved, painted wooden horse statue originating in the Swedish province of Dalarna. In the olden days the Dala horses were used as toys for young children, however in modern times it has become a symbol of Dalarna as well as that of Sweden in general. Several different types of Dala horses are made with distinguishing features common to the locality of the site where they are produced. One particular style has become much more common and widespread than others, it is carved and brightly painted along with painted details of tack and harness in white, green, yellow and red.
This larger Dala Horse is painted a light mustard yellow although his legs seem to have peeled and faded. His harness regalia is painted russet orange, yellow, red, green and teal. He is an unusual color (mustard yellow) and with his bare legs he has the look of a Palomino horse. He measures 6” inches high and long and almost 2” inches wide. He would look wonderful grouped together with other Dala Horses or displayed with other Folk Art Toys. A wonderful addition to an equine collection.
