*** Who was Socrates?
Socrates (470 – 399 BC) was a Greek philosopher from Athens and is considered the father of western ethical tradition and thought. An enigmatic figure, he made no writings, and he is known mainly through the accounts of classical writers after his lifetime, particularly his students Plato and Xenophon. He grew up during the golden age of Pericles' in Athens and served with distinction as a soldier, but became best known as a questioner of everything and everyone. His style of teaching immortalized as the Socratic method involved not conveying knowledge but rather asking question after clarifying question until his students arrived at their own understanding. Plato was his most famous student and the teacher of Aristotelis is who was after the tutor of Alexander the Great. Greek philosophy as first developed by Socrates, was spread throughout the known world during Alexander's conquests.
*** Why is Socrates important today?
Primarily, Socrates enjoyed the company of people. He loved listening to them, understanding their problems and their ways of thinking. He believed that people had the capability to solve issues through just logical thinking. This is still relevant as ever as his theories are critical to modern Western Philosophy.
