The first four pictures of this listing show the actual light for sale. It is a beautiful clear "straw" colored Hemingray 40 type insulator. The last photo in this listing shows the different shades of clear/white. The light on the left is the "straw" color and has hints of light yellow in the glass. The light on the right is "crystal" clear. This light comes with a 35", 2 wire twisted tan/taupe cord. These lights are shipped with a 15W bulb and measure 3 1/4" wide at the bottom x 4" tall. The top piece/strain relief is a nickel finish. Other glass/cord combinations are available. Contact me for more info.
Glass insulators are relics of an old technology found mostly along old rail and abandoned telegraph lines, they have a historical significance to the telecom industry worldwide. The oldest insulators pre-date the buy Civil War and were produced until the 1970's.
A few words about these insulators. They were created without any sort of aesthetics in mind. They were strictly designed for utilitarian purposes. "Working glass" (pun intended) if you will. They might have bubbles and swirls and other little quirks that make them unique. They are not new or mass produced in a giant county 8 time zones away. They were made here in the good old U S of A. You have to consider that most of these pieces of glass have been on a pole for at least 75 years, some probably longer (patent date 1907 etched on some), covered with coal and diesel soot and surviving harsh Illinois summers and winters. When I get them they are cleaned and then go into an acid bath for a couple of weeks and cleaned again. I try to use the most perfect ones that I find so that you have something that is unique but once again has a purpose. Working glass!
The styles of insulator that are most common in my area are Hemingray 40, 42 and 45 and they are clear or the blue/green color shown. The other style is the Hemingray 145 “Beehive” which is slimmer and more dome shaped. All of these insulators are unique because of bubbles and other inconsistencies in the glass.
These lights are fitted with an E12 candelabra base and will accept many types of incandescent and LED Bulbs. These are all 110/120v and can be adapted for low voltage applications. Some of the fabric covered cords are 3 conductor but only 2 are used. Cords included are 32” in length but can be ordered with a longer length and are available in a variety of colors. Most track lighting manufacturers sell a pendant adapter that can be used with this lighting.
