This is a rare & lovely thing! As a life long tool collector I know quality when I see it, even if I'm sadly ignorant of usage!
If I've misdescribed anything & you know better, I live to learn!

So, the Stroboscope.

“The stroboscope is essentially buy a more complicated variation of the tuning fork. At the top of the instrument, there are two steel plates (or diaphragms) each with a slit at the centre and overlapping, which are clamped at the end of the two prongs, by means of screws.

When the two prongs are at rest, the overlapping slits are perfectly aligned so that light may pass through both. If the fork is then caused to vibrate, it is possible to see through the slits twice in each complete period, that is, 2n times per second, where n is the frequency. Hence the stroboscope is used in many instances to accurately determine frequency as an object vibrating or rotating at the same frequency will appear stationary when viewed through the slits”.

(With many thanks to the Physics Museum of the University of Queensland, Australia!)

Made in England by Ragg & Company, the premier manufactures of musical & scientific tuning forks, this is a little work of art!

Surgical steel cast & tuned to micron accuracy, it dates to around 1950 & was acquired from an English University Physics Department when they updated their equipment a couple of years ago.

It's in perfect, undamaged condition & if struck centrally as indicated seems to vibrate almost indefinitely! (Don't strike on the tips as this may deform the diaphragms!)

The case is sold beech with brass fittings. Very slight wear to the exterior but no damage & it closes securely.

Stamped 140~ (Hz) & Ragg, Sheffield, England. 23.5cm long x 2.9cm x 9mm deep including the plates. 120g weight. Set weight 275g.

A wonderful instrument for the collector & if you're a Physicist or Science Nerd, can you live without it?! I've very much enjoyed playing with it!
