Antique brass shoehorn
Found at the estate of the original owners. He was a Navy man. The family appeared to have kept many old things most likely passed down through the family. Not sure of the date of this item, it is old. Possibly Victorian era. I have never myself seen one like this and can find no information regarding this item through research.
Believed to be made of brass, this has a swivel tongue. The part that goes into your shoe swivels. The shoehorn measures 7 1/2 inches long. The handle measures 3 3/4 inches long the tongue measures 3 inches long and then there a little piece holding the 2 together.
In good overall condition, (someone) polished it. Before it was polished it was a darker brown and very antique looking. It has scuffs about but nothing real major. It actually is in good condition for however old it is. Just from the design I am thinking Victorian or older. But aga, I just don't know. The swivel works fine and it is strong and sturdy. The only thing that I can see is that it leans a bit to the left at where it is attached. But so little to the left.
I really don't know but my guess would be that this is either an early version of a shoehorn, a shoehorn design for wealthy people who wore more delicate shoes or buy it was a design that just never took off. Whatever it is, it is quite interesting and a nice piece.
