Like most of her generation, my mother always had a stash of fabric "just in case" Every sewing project produced a small bundle of fabric remnants left over rolled up and sealed with a pin. Those women were raised in an era of thrift and nothing was ever too small to throw. I honor those savers by continuing to use even the smallest of remnants in my own work.
This rug is created of many many different odds and ends of fabric and is mostly shirts. It is a light thinner rug because of the fabrics used.
Hit or Miss is a very traditional technique method of recycling the smallest of leftover pieces of fabric. Because of this it is very labor intensive. I usually fillet 50 or 60 shirts to get a nice big batch of colors. Those are then cut into strips. I hate waste so some of the pieces are as short as four inches. This means I am able to do only one or two hit or miss batches per year. I love the festival of colors and the honoring of traditional techniques.

My buy greatest joy in weaving comes in color exploration. Weaving rag rugs allows me to combine colors in ways that I might not have thought of if the "rags" were not in front of me, daring me to put them together.
All my rugs are woven on a large vintage "Weaver's Delight" rug loom built in 1942. The whole house shakes when I am weaving. The designs are my own and I have won several awards for my work. I use 100% recycled materials in my wefts and either cotton or polyester warp. My rugs are machine washable in warm or cool. It is best to line dry. Give the fringe a good shake to straighten it and hang over a clothesline or rail. With a bit of care this rug will last a good many years.
Shipping is included on this rug when sent within the contiguous United States. I am happy to ship elsewhere. Please contact me before purchase so that I may provide you with an accurate rate.
The little boy in the picture is my beloved late husband going off to Kindergarten with his little rug, little realizing how many hundreds of rugs he would later haul after hitching up with a weaver
