Very pretty and attractive decorative work on this wicker basket. This type of Chinese sewing baskets are quite old dating from the late 1800's to the 1930's.
In the 1800s in China, a bride would be presented small gifts in these ornate baskets during her wedding.
These oriental baskets were later imported to the U.S. between 1880 and 1930 and were often used as sewing baskets.
The lids were adorned with colored glass rings, old Chinese coins, colorful beads and knotted or macramé cord.
This one has 5 old Chinese coins, a light red glass ring or handle, (often referred to as Peking Glass) and 22 round to oblong beads of different colors. a knotted bow and knotted decorative piece complete the design on the lid.
Notice this basket has a small amount of damage to the bottom half. As shown in some close-up photos and if you look carefully you'll see a few strands of wicker straw that have come loose around the rim right where the lid would come to a close. There are a couple of the upright thicker pieces that have cracked which is what allowed the above straws to pop loose.
With the lid in place this can't be seen unless you do a close inspection, note the lid fits on on about 90% all the way without having to put stress on the damaged area.
Overall considering its age this is in very good display condition.
Measurements are 12" diameter and 4 1/2" tall
Cleaning note, before taking photos we used an air compressor and a small nozzle and blew buy all the dust out of the crevices in this woven basket.
