Bog-wood comes from ancient forests that once covered Ireland. Huge oaks, yew trees and Scots pine trees have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained by tannin dissolved in the acidic water. Bog-wood represents the early stages in the fossilization of wood, with further stages ultimately forming lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years.

Considered under the old Irish Brehon Law as one of the 7 nobles of the woods or Chieftan Trees, Scots pine, (also known as Red Deal) has been recognized as symbols of fertility by the ancient Celts.
The evergreen nature of the pine tree represented immortality and at the winter solstice, the druids would light bonfires of Scots pine branches, with the aim of drawing back the sun into the cycle of seasons, a sign of the return of light and pointer towards new paths.
